For us, after countless hours of testing, the easiest way was to make our USB drive bootable:

  1. PREAMBLE: Make sure your computer supports booting from a USB drive. You will need to consultCheck with your good manufacturer to be sure, as generally anything made in 2007 or later can have this feature. DISK:
  2. boot Create a low standard Windows boot floppy with any version of Windows or download it HERE for PC, then you can download it for free HERE.
  3. FORMAT. Partition and format your USB drive to work with any version of Windows or DOS.
  4. CHANGING THE BIOS: Boot the computer into BIOS Setup and set the floppy disk on the hard drive as the first boot device and the USB hard drive as the second boot device. For the following to work properly, feel free to disable or even disable our existing hard drives.
  5. FDISK: Boot the computer from a DOS boot floppy, in this case run FDISK to make sure each USB drive has an ACTIVE PARTITION (option 2 in the FDISK menu), then close FDISK.
  6. SYSTEM FILES: If you have control, type SYS C: (or FORMAT /S C: ) at the command prompt to replicate boot files to the primary partition of the USB drive.
  7. MBR: Type FDISK /MBR in response to an immediate command to write the master boot record to all USB drives.
  8. TEST: Remove the diskette and restart the computer. If all goes well, the computer should boot from the external USB drive.
